The SIT is a two-week full-time funded program designed to introduce digital humanities and public humanities work to community organizations and public agencies working within cultural heritage, knowledge preservation, sustainability and environmentalism, and other key areas related to Caribbean history and culture. The goal of the workshop is to introduce the tools and methods of digital humanities to participants to assist with developing projects and programs around their areas of advocacy or research.
This course takes a project-based approach, exploring ways of documenting, visualizing and storytelling the various aspects of their research and advocacy. To do this, we will engage in discussion around the importance of culture and community work in the Caribbean – past, present and future. The course prompts participants to interrogate the ways that digital technologies provide us with opportunities and challenges for preserving the Caribbean historical record, strengthening advocacy and activism for work in arts, culture and the humanities, and opening possibilities for a more just and livable Caribbean future. Participants then apply these ideas and discussions to their own work and then learn digital tools, software and systems to bring these ideas to life in digital projects.
