Second Innings

By Garvin LeBlanc

I’m back! I have more time on my hands, I can spend time at the office now and it feels great. Last semester, I spent most of my time in room N101 at Dominica State College working hard to finish my projects on time and that prevented me from completing intern hours at the office. Though it was not possible for me to be there physically, I was still able to produce because most of the work I do at Create Caribbean are graphics and that can be done at home. Yet still, I felt a bit less of an intern by not being at the office as often as I would have liked to be. Now, I have a chance to change that.

IMG-20160312-WA0001Returning to Create Caribbean, I felt that I still had a lot to contribute and learn from the institute. I felt that since I was able to submit my work on time last semester while basically living in school doing school work, that in this “easier semester” I would be able to handle things a lot better. I am currently dealing with the Mathematics courses required for my Architectural Technology major and I should be done by next semester. Having Only Math and intern hours to complete, I felt that I could handle Something else, and so, I added Refrigeration and Air Conditioning as a major. My advisor, Mr. Hurtault said that, if I were to spend two more semesters at Dominica State College, then completing a certificate program within that time frame would be wise and beneficial to me in the future. Therefore I chose my new major to learn new skills and to spend my time even more constructively. When I’m not at college, I’m at QuikPrint working with my father. What made all this easier for me is the fact that being an intern at Create Caribbean helped me to develop better time management skills and while the bolts on my time management machine could still be a bit tighter, I feel like everything is functioning great.

Becoming a Create Caribbean Intern was an easy decision for me, and I don’t regret it for one minute. historygraphics-01I love digital artwork and design and I’m allowed a lot of creative freedom with my work at Create Caribbean. I’ve said before that my colour preference does not lean towards the vibrant zones of the colour wheel but I’ve learned to compromise my preferences to produce artwork that everyone likes. The latest project that I’ve worked on is the Dominica History project and I’m very proud of myself and the artwork that I produced for that project. I recently submitted a concept for the Maroon Country project and hopefully it will be approved and displayed on the Create Caribbean website. I feel like I can give a lot more to the institute over the next two semesters and I’m very eager for the challenges and opportunities that will come my way in that time. Tchau !
