The Allure of Brooklyn

By Jodine Robin

I will forever be grateful for this wonderful opportunity presented to me by Create Caribbean. An amazing institution that encourages growth and development mentally. Who knew that I would have gone to New York with an amazing, outgoing group of young people as well as directors and had the opportunity to visit many historical site, museums and colleges. Out of the six colleges/universities we visited during our time in New York, Brooklyn College was our favorite, which we toured on Monday, August 1. The College wasn’t most-liked because our director Schuyler K Esprit obtained her Bachelor’s in English Language and Literature there, but for its appealing campus life and academic ranking.

IMG-20160804-WA0022Brooklyn College is a part of the eleven CUNY (The City University of New York) schooling system where colleges are located in the five boroughs of New York. Brooklyn College stands out for having the largest technological library in the CUNY system. The library has 1.8 million hardcopy books and 500 computers readily available for students. On each floor of the library there’s a quiet room designated to complete silence for optimum work while there’s a total of 22 private study rooms in the library where at least 2 students must accommodate. There is also a library café open every day of the week, 24 hours a day, with 75 computers available to all students .

In addition, the five schools of Brooklyn College are housed in various halls they include the Murray Koppelman School of Business, School of Education (James Hall), Humanities and Social Sciences (Boylan Hall), Visual ,Media and Performing Arts (Boylan Hall), Natural and Behavorial Sciences (Ingersoll Hall). The Halls of the College are named after prominent people in history and administrators such as President Theodore Roosevelt whom the Roosevelt Hall was named after.IMG-20160802-WA0034

The Student Center located on the east side of the campus is entirely outfitted for the College’s students. Several of the college’s 150 clubs gather for meetings as well as student councils including the greek council. The student center also has a game room, tv room, computer room and information desk. The information desk is the Student Center Services area  where students are welcomed and receive as much help as possible with questions pertaining to the building, campus and so on. On the two upper floors of the building includes the Brooklyn College Conference Center which has a conference room where lecturers, students, staff and residents of the borough assemble for meetings.

Rather, accommodation is entirely up to the student. Moreover, the college participates in multiple sports such as basketball, swimming, soccer tennis and so on, there’s also a gym to keep the athletes and students in top shape physical. This college is truly an outstanding and remarkable institution.
