Internship

The RTC Internship Program at Create Caribbean Research Institute is an academic enrichment initiative. Students will be exposed to the culture of academic research, digital humanities and community engagement. Students will receive the opportunity to collaborate, learn and to practice their own talents on projects of importance to the college community, to national development and to building regional and international networks as students and scholars.


Program Structure

2014-12-05 09.48.55The internship program is a paid academic enrichment program. Students will receive US$500 per semester during the course of the internship program subject to satisfactory academic performance and program progress. Any changes to the payment schedule will be made by the Director of Create Caribbean Research Institute.

To be eligible for the RTC Internship, students must be enrolled at Dominica State College or other qualifying institution and available and willing to commit approximately 10 hours per week during the regular semester to work and learn in the practice-based research environment of the Institute and 20 hours per week for one month during the Summer.

Interns who successfully complete the academic and service requirements of the program will be awarded a Certificate in Caribbean Digital Studies from Dominica State College. A special recognition ceremony will take place at the end of each academic year to recognize students who have completed the internship program.


Program Activities

Interns will work under the guidance and instruction of the Director and staff on digital humanities research and teaching tasks for a range of programmes and activities related to the Institute’s academic and community objectives. Interns report to the Director of Create Caribbean Research Institute via the Internship Coordinator who supervises their tasks and manages schedules and reporting.

Interns are expected to learn and apply research and writing, and information and communication technology (ICT) skills to a variety of academic research projects (in digital and other formats). These include digital humanities projects designed at Create Caribbean as part of the academic program, placement at community organizations and agencies to apply digital humanities and other research skills, Create and Code technology education workshops for children, and other programming and fundraising activities offered by the Institute.

Interns may also be asked to perform various administrative and support tasks to the Institute, particularly related to the dissemination of information about Create Caribbean’s calendar of events.

Priority majors for the internship program include (although other majors will be considered):

  • English/ Literature/ Writing/ Communications
  • Information Technology/Computer Science
  • Geography
  • Biology
  • Psychology
  • Tourism and Hospitality Studies
  • Business/Economics/Entrepreneurship

Program Rules and Guidelines

Academic requirements of the program:

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 must be maintained throughout duration of the internship
  • 12-14 course credits of program related coursework at Dominica State College
    • Digital Humanities Research (HIS115) – 3 credits
    • Course Modules (COLL224) – 1 credit x 2 (minimum)
    • Research Practicum (COLL225) – 1 credit per semester for 5 semesters
    • Capstone Project and Portfolio (COLL226) – 2 credits
  • 10 service hours per week during the academic year on DH projects or community service (COLL225 credit)
  • Summer commitment (between Years 1 and 2) of 1 month of internship assignment at Create Caribbean and/or community organization (minimum 20 service hours per week) (COLL225)
  • Students must matriculate for a minimum of 12 credit hours at DSC each semester
  • Students must exhibit good conduct on campus and follow all school rules and guidelines, and display professionalism in all contexts pertaining to the work of the Institute

Duties of the interns are as follows:

  • Collaborate on research projects and perform other research related tasks as required.
  • Conduct promotion of Create Caribbean programs and activities (sometimes on weekends)
  • Attend and lead workshops for Create and Code curriculum children’s workshops (sometimes on weekends)
  • Provide administrative support to the Create Caribbean management and support staff if necessary.

*Under special circumstances, students who cannot formally register for HIS 115 will be exempted by completing relevant coursework independently with the Program Director.
