The 2016 Create and Code, Summer Tech Camp officially begins on Monday 11, July 2016 and runs for two weeks ending on Friday 22, July 2016. During the course of these two weeks, the students will not only have fun interacting with various programming languages through child-friendly drag-and-drop programs. They also have an enjoyable time socializing with each other, the interns and staff.

Each day, students learn how to code in order to build apps, develop games, or design websites. Most importantly, they learn how to use the Internet in a responsible and positive way. The curriculum is designed to accommodate each child’s computer literacy level. The games, apps and websites built during the course of the summer tech camp highlight social issues within Dominica and the wider Caribbean in order to expose the students to relevant topics that affect their own lives. Some examples are animal preservation, climate change, recycling, career options and much more.

According to Maria Klawe, President of Harvey Mudd College “Coding is today’s language of creativity, all our children deserve a chance to become creators instead consumers of computer science.” In the ever changing digital world, learning to code is useful no matter what your goals in life are. Create and Code, summer tech camp therefore aims to unlock creativity and build confidence in the students regardless of age.

IMG_0100The students will be sorted using their digital literacy level; these young creators will be using these forms of coding to assist them in building their games, apps and websites during the course of the summer tech camp; Scratch M.I.T app inventor and HTML. Scratch is a free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations. While, M.I.T app inventor is an innovative beginner’s introduction to programming and app creation that transforms the complex language of text-based coding into visual, drag-and-drop building blocks. For the more advanced students, HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) will be taught, this is the standard markup language used to create web pages. The Create Caribbean interns are well versed in all the coding platforms and will be readily available in times of need, to guide the students ensuring that each child grows and advances in the world of technology.

Students who grasp the digital literacy at a faster pace within this camp will be able to advance to next level if their instructor sees fit. Create and Code summer tech camp goal is to use the kids creativity to model games, websites and apps in their own image as these creators are the future. At the end of the Camp the students will have a deep understanding of the coding world and the essential knowledge to make a difference.

Students at Create and Code learn how to “think it all the way through” to explore their creativity and reasoning, and improve their problem solving skills. This summer tech camp is a stepping-stone for children who wish to become programmers or artists and innovators of any kind.
