Our region is filled with rich literature, yet, they aren't as popular as international literary work. Ultimately, it can be seen that novels are prominent in Cuba and short stories are prominent in Haiti and Jamaica. It is also seen that folklore/folktales, short stories as well as short story collections are mostly published in Trinidad and Tobago. Authors such as Alma Flor Ada, Edwidge Danticat and Valerie Bloom are prime examples of writers who use personal experiences or knowledge of their native country to draw familiarity with young readers. Based on my research, Trinidadian authors such as Amber Drappier and Lynette Comissiong focus on their culture by writing books that contain folklore. When this is done, not only do they keep the rich native storytelling alive for future generations, but they also spread their culture. This further allows other countries to draw comparisons among cultures and pinpoint the similarities. For example, the soucouyant is a known folklore character in countries such as the Commonwealth of Dominica, St. Lucia, Haiti, and Trinidad. The process of implementing and finishing this project was not easy. Yet, it provided me with knowledge and rather deep insight and appreciation into the way in which Caribbean authors write children's literature. Our Caribbean has a prolific amount of culture hence the term, 'Melting Pot.' However, it is not valued as much as international literature. Growing up I never really enjoyed reading because the storyline of the books was uninteresting. In my honest opinion, the majority of them were boring. After I conducted my research, I contemplated the literary aspect of my childhood and realised that my shelves mostly consisted of American stories and fairytales. If my library contained books written by Caribbean authors, I would have enjoyed reading before in comparison to the way I love reading now. It is because of Caribbean literature, I am so deep into this "literary world". The creativity, culture and experience of these authors and their country has opened my mind and developed how I think and analyse certain texts. In other words, they have helped me see beyond the horizon. Through my project and ''YOUR'' personal experience, I hope you gained more gratitude in Caribbean children's literature as I have.
