Create Caribbean observes International Girls in ICT Day

Uncategorized

Ahead of International Girls in ICT Day on Thursday April 27, Create Caribbean Research Institute at Dominica State College has collaborated with a number of institutions, including the Ministry of Information, Science, Telecommunications and Technology, The National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC) and the Government of Dominica’s ICT Unit to raise awareness about the importance of girls and women working in fields related to information and communications technologies.

The Dominica State College students enrolled in Create Caribbean’s Research and Service Learning Internship have worked with staff of the Institute for a video entitled “Calling all Girls.” The video aims to show girls and young women the range of industries and activities that use ICT and to encourage them to take advantage of the benefits of technology, no matter what area in which they choose to study or work.

Director of Create Caribbean, Dr. Schuyler Esprit was excited about the students’ involvement in recognizing International Girls in ICT Day. She stated, “The potential of girls and young women in Dominica to make a significant contribution to national development cannot be overstated. Our goal at Create Caribbean is to engender and foster their interests in whatever fields they want to pursue but also to show them that they definitely belong in the fields of work and study, like ICT, where for too long they have been excluded. This video is one of the ways we want to change their perception of what’s possible.”  The video was written, directed and produced by the staff and students of Create Caribbean.

International Girls in ICT Day was designed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). According to the ITU, “International Girls in ICT Day, an initiative backed by all ITU Member States in ITU Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Rev. Busan, 2014), aims to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in the growing field of ICTs, enabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greater female participation in the ICT sector. International Girls in ICT Day is celebrated on the 4th Thursday in April every year.”
